BERKELEY -- A midmorning shooting left one man dead on a busy street and police were canvassing a west side neighborhood Monday afternoon for clues.

The 34-year-old man was pronounced dead at a hospital around noon. Albany paramedics had worked on him for about a half-hour at the shooting scene at 1080 Delaware St., between San Pablo Avenue and Tenth Street, police said. His name was not released pending notification of relatives.

It was the city's first homicide of the year, said Berkeley Police spokeswoman Jennifer Coats.

Police and paramedics arrived just after 11 a.m. for a report of a shots fired, Coats said. Witnesses said they saw as many as four people running west on Delaware Street after the shooting, but no arrests were made.

A car was also seen going westbound in reverse on Delaware Street immediately after the shooting. Police found it in a driveway about a block from the crime scene and say it may be the victim's car, but they are not certain.

A witness at the scene said she was driving on Delaware Street, heard two pops and saw the victim fall down.

Employees from a Jackson Hewitt tax service company tried to help the man before paramedics arrived.
