Berkeley police attempting to serve a search warrant shot and killed two dogs at a home in Richmond on Tuesday after the animals attacked and one bit an officer on the arm, police said.

The officer was taken by ambulance from a home in the 1600 block of Monterey Street in Richmond to Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo, treated and released, police said.

Members of the Berkeley Special Enforcement Unit approached the home at about 3:15 p.m. and were confronted by three pit bulls. One of the dogs attacked an officer, and a second dog joined in, police said. Both dogs were shot and killed.

Police spokeswoman Stephanie Polizziani did not reveal details of the warrant.
