Officials at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs and the Lawrence Hall of Science in the Berkeley hills are warning visitors to beware of mountain lions after an adult and two cubs were sighted with dead goat and deer carcasses nearby.
E.J. Bernacki, spokesman for the labs, said there have been multiple sightings of the three mountain lions in addition two dear carcasses and one dead goat.
The warnings come just one month after Berkeley police shot and killed a 100-pound male mountain lion in Berkeley's gourmet ghetto, a heavily populated business and residential area of the city down the hill from the labs.
"This time of year it's normal for mountain lions to kill deer, so if you see deer, that's where the mountain lions are," said state fish and game Warden Jessica Jacobsen. "At this time it's not a safety issue, it's open land and they are killing their normal prey."
Jacobsen said if you see a mountain lion, face it, don't run away, wave your arms, make lots of noise and "if there are objects near like rocks or whatever you have, throw it at the animal."
